12 Business Card Blunders to Prevent Media

The lowly company card we don’t give it a second thought before we get the thing composed, and we simply do what everyone else does. Many men and women, new in business, get the business card published before they’re really ready to, which induces lots of the mistakes I record under. In both cases, experienced or new, we’re missing substantial opportunities to allow your small business card take a number of the work off your shoulders. We might take it for granted, however I feel that your business card is one of your most important pieces of marketing collateral, and the most under-utilized.

Here are my tips for ways to have your business card working as hard as you do. If you would like to play along, pull out your business card and see if your card is guilty of some of these initial four no-no’s.

1. Missing email. Believe it or not, lots of the cards that I receive via media meetings are missing email addresses. This is quite common with new small business owners and people in the personal care business, but nevertheless, there is no explanation.

2. An email address that ends with , , , or your ISP’s domain name. Everybody in business for themselves must use their own domain email (such as @). This is free promotion of your web site, so why are you advertising Yahoo!, Comcast, or AOL instead of yourself? Advertising a free email accounts as your business email is just plain unprofessional.

3. Glossy cards you can’t write on. Okay, that is my pet peeve. It’s true, you can receive these cards printed for free online. That sends a loud message that you don’t even have the cash for business cards which you just do everything on the cheap. That isn’t what I want folks to think about my business.

4. A web site address printed on the card that isn’t up yet. When I receive a business card from you, I am likely to see your web site to find out more. If it doesn’t come up, it tells me one of two things: you didn’t cover your hosting company or webmaster, or you have not gotten into that job yet. Both are poor messages to send.

Okay, how are you doing? These are extremely basic, so in the event that you’ve been in operation for a couple of decades, you’re probably doing well. So today let us inquire whether your business card looks like it is from a small operation or a Fortune 500 business. How about these small company no-no’s?

5. Missing job name. Every business card must list your job title, particularly if you’re President or CEO.

6. Photo of you. This is tell-tale little business enterprise. I disagree with some people who feel that it assists during networking; you can visit the web site and view their image there. An image takes up precious card real estate and yells “self” It’s simply not the most effective thing to have in your card.

7. No logo. Every company needs a logo for branding its image.

8. Clip art. Your logo needs to be the only art on your own card.

9. Weird shape. I really don’t feel the way to stand out is via strange colors or contour of your business card.

Now, let’s get to what really matters: the promotion. Here are some things to consider that very few others are doing this will help your results together with prospects:

10. 1 phone number. Prospects may get confused about what number to call. List only one, or make it apparent when to call what amount. Don’t keep us guessing.

11. The business you are in. If you said nothing and passed your business card over to a stranger and asked them exactly what business you are in, would they figure out it? If not, neither can your prospect. Ensure that your tag line or business name clearly describes the business you’re in and if it doesn’t, you’ll want to add something on your card that does.

12. Things to do next. Get prospects into your funnel by telling them exactly what to do next directly on your business card. Can they get a complimentary consultation? A free white paper? Make it clear on the card they may register for another step to get to know you.

How’d you do? I hope you passed, and if not, I see a trip to your own printer in the long run.
