12 Business Card Blunders to Avoid in Networking

The lowly company card : we don’t give it a second thought before we get the thing composed, and we just do what everybody else does. Many people, new in company, get the company card published before they are willing to, which induces many of the mistakes I record below. In both cases, experienced or new, we are missing substantial opportunities to allow your business card take a number of the work off your shoulders. We might take it for granted, but I believe your business card is among your most important pieces of marketing collateral, and the most under-utilized.

Here are my tips for ways to get your company card functioning as hard as you do. If you want to play along, pull out your business card and see whether your card is guilty of any of these first four no-no’s.

1. Missing email. Believe it or not, lots of the cards I get via media meetings are missing email addresses. This is quite common with new business owners and people in the private care business, but nevertheless, there’s no excuse.

2. An email address that ends with , , , or your ISP’s domain name. Everyone in business for themselves must use their own domain email (such as @). This is free advertising of your web site, so why are you advertisements Yahoo!, Comcast, or AOL instead of yourself? Advertising a free email accounts as your organization email is just plain incorrect.

3. Glossy cards you can’t write on. Alright, that is my pet peeve. Yes, you are able to receive these cards printed for free on the Internet. That sends a loud message that you don’t even have the cash for business cards which you just do everything on the cheap. That isn’t what I want people to consider my business.

4. A web site address printed on the card that is not up yet. When I get a business card from you, I am likely to visit your web site to learn more. If it does not come up, it tells me one of two things: you didn’t cover your hosting business or webmaster, or you have not gotten into this project yet. Both are bad messages to send.

Okay, how are you doing? These are very basic, so in the event that you’ve been in operation for a few decades, you’re likely doing well. So today let us ask if your business card looks like it is from a small operation or a Fortune 500 business. How about these little business no-no’s?

5. Missing job name. Every business card must list your job title, especially if you are President or CEO.

6. Photo of you personally. This is tell-tale small business. I disagree with some people who feel that it helps during networking; you could go to the web site and see their picture there. A picture takes up valuable card property and screams “self” It is just not the most effective thing to get in your card.

7. No logo. Every company needs a logo for branding its own image.

8. Clip art. Your logo should be the only art on your card.

9. Weird form. I really don’t feel the way to stand out is through strange colors or shape of your business card.

Today, let’s get to what really matters: the marketing. Here are some things to think about that very few others are doing that will help your results together with prospects:

10. 1 phone number. Prospects can get confused as to what number to call. List just one, or make it apparent when to predict what number. Do not keep us guessing.

11. The company you are in. Should you said nothing and passed your business card over to a stranger and asked them what business you are in, could they figure it out? Otherwise, neither can your potential. Make sure your tag line or company name clearly defines the business you’re in and if it does not, you’ll want to add something in your card which does.

12. What to do. Get prospects into your site by telling them what to do next directly on your business card. Can they get a free consultation? A free white paper? Make it clear on the card they may sign up for another step to get to know you.
