12 Business Card Blunders to Avoid in Media

The lowly business card we don’t give it another thought before we get the thing composed, and we just do what everyone else does. Many people, new in business, get the company card published before they are really ready to, which causes many of the mistakes that I record below. In both cases, new or experienced, we’re missing huge opportunities to let your small business card take a number of their work off your shoulders. We may take it for granted, however I feel your business card is among your most important parts of marketing collateral, and also the most under-utilized.

4. A web site address printed on the card that is not up yet. When I get a business card from you, I’m very likely to visit your web site to learn more. If it does not come up, it tells me one of 2 things: you either did not pay your hosting business or webmaster, or you have not gotten into this job yet. Both are bad messages to send.

10. 1 phone number. Prospects can get confused about what number to call. List only one, or make it clear when to predict what number. Don’t keep us guessing.

11. The business you’re in. If you said nothing and handed your business card over to a stranger and asked them exactly what business you are in, could they figure it out? Otherwise, neither can your prospect. Make sure your tag line or company name clearly defines the business you’re in and if it doesn’t, you will want to add something in your card that does.

12. Things to do next. Get prospects in your site by telling them what to do next right on your business card. Can they receive a complimentary consultation? A free white paper? Make it clear on the card they can register for another step to get to know you.
