12 Business Card Blunders to Prevent Media

The lowly business card we don’t give it a second thought before we get the thing composed, and we just do what everyone else does. A lot of men and women, new in company, get the business card printed before they’re willing to, which causes lots of the mistakes I record below. In both cases, experienced or new, we’re missing huge opportunities to allow your business card take a number of the work off your own shoulders. We might take it for granted, however I believe your business card is one of your most important pieces of marketing collateral, and the most under-utilized.

Here are my tips for ways to have your company card functioning as hard as you do. If you want to play together, pull out your business card and see if your card is guilty of some of these initial four no-no’s.

1. Missing email. Believe it or not, lots of the cards that I get via networking meetings are missing email addresses. This is quite common with new business owners and individuals in the personal care business, but still, there’s no explanation.

2. An email address that ends with , , , or your ISP’s domain name. Everyone in business for themselves must be using their own domain email (like @). This is free promotion of your internet site, so why are you advertising Yahoo!, Comcast, or AOL instead of yourself? Advertising a free email accounts as your organization email is just plain incorrect.

3. Glossy cards you can’t write on. Okay, that is my pet peeve. It’s true, you are able to receive these cards printed at no cost online. That sends a loud message that you don’t even have the money for business cards which you do everything on the cheap. That isn’t what I want folks to consider my business.

4. A web site address printed on the card that is not up yet. When I receive a business card from you, I am likely to see your web site to find out more. If it does not come up, it tells me one of 2 things: you did not pay your hosting company or webmaster, or you haven’t gotten to that project yet. Both are poor messages to send.

Okay, how are you doing? These are extremely basic, so if you’ve been in operation for a couple of years, you are likely doing well. So today let’s ask if your business card looks like it’s from a small operation or a Fortune 500 business. How about these little business no-no’s?

5. Missing job title. Every business card should list your project title, particularly if you are President or CEO.

6. Photo of you. This is tell-tale small business enterprise. I disagree with some people who feel that it assists during media; you can go to the web site and see their image there. A picture takes up precious card real estate and screams “self” It’s just not the most effective thing to get in your card.

7. No emblem. Every company needs a logo for branding its image.

8. Clip art. Your logo needs to be the sole art on your card.

9. Weird shape. I really don’t feel the best way to stand out is via odd colours or contour of your business card.

Today, let’s get to what really matters: the promotion. Here are some items to think about that very few others do that will help your outcomes with prospects:

10. 1 phone number. Prospects can get confused about what number to call. List only one, or make it apparent when to call what amount. Do not keep us guessing.

11. The company you’re in. If you said nothing and passed your business card over to a stranger and asked them exactly what business you’re in, could they figure it out? If not, neither can your prospect. Make sure your tag line or business name clearly defines the business you are in and if it does not, you’ll want to add something on your card which does.

12. Things to do. Get prospects in your site by telling them what to do next right on your own business card. Can they get a free consultation? A free white paper? Make it clear on the card they may register for another step to get to know you better.

How would you do? I hope you passed, and if not, I see that a trip to your own printer on your near future.
